Homemade Tortilla Chips

Chips and salsa are my favorite snack. As someone who can’t eat gluten or dairy, tortilla chips make for a nice, healthy treat. The problem is that everyone else in my house loves them too, so bags don’t last very long. And when you only grocery shop once a month or so, that leaves you chipless quite often.

Making tortillas chips is really easy if you have a little time and patience.

To start, all you need are tortillas. You can use store-bought corn tortillas or if you have corn masa flour in the house, you can make your own.

Step 1: Mix 3 cups masa harina with 2 cups of warm water and then let it sit for about ten minutes to absorb.

Step 2: Roll about 2 tablespoons of the wet masa into a ball and flatten it into a circle. We use a cast iron tortilla press to make them, but you can easily use a heavy pan to flatten the dough.

Tip – Use two pieces of parchment paper or cut a ziplock bag into two pieces to prevent the dough from sticking to your press.

Step 3: Place the circle of flattened masa dough on a hot cast iron pan. Do not oil the pan. Flip the dough after a minute and let the other side cook. You now have a tortilla.

Step 4:. Slice your tortilla into fourths or sixths, depending on preference.

Tip – Use a pizza cutter to make your slices.

Step 5: Drop your tortilla pieces into a pan of hot oil, allowing them to fry evenly on each side until crispy.

Step 6: Remove the fried tortilla chips from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate and sprinkle with salt. Allow the chips to cool and the grease to drain.

Step 7: Enjoy!

It’s that easy to make tortillas chips. They taste better when they are freshly made and you know exactly what is in them!
